A topsy-turvy spring: warm in April, then up-and-down like a yo-yo in May and June, which was detrimental to flowering and vine development, and fostered violent attacks of mildew. However, warm weather set in during the month of August and lasted until the end of the year. August and September were very dry. It never seemed the right time to begin harvesting because some 275 mm of rain fell in a month, eliminating any chance of picking quality fruit, despite unremitting work done on 28 days spread over 6 weeks.
