Château D'Yquem

1972

Very much cooler than average from April to October and very dry from June to December – except in August when showers had an adverse effect on ripening. No rain whatsoever fell from the 2nd of September to the 15th of November, and so noble rot had great difficulty in spreading. Only 10 barrels' worth of grapes had reached the desired sugar level by the 10th of October so, despite considerable effort, very little wine was produced. The drought conditions deprived Yquem of an entire vintage.
